Cala Tortuga Beach

Cala Tortuga Beach

Cala Tortuga is an unspoiled beach on the north coast of Menorca. Next to the Favartix lighthouse and close to the also well known Cala Presili (or Cala Capifort). It’s also know as Arenal de Morella but in all the guides, maps and road signs appears as Cala Tortuga.

The name of the beach comes from the turtles who live in the lagoon beside the beach.

The beach has a length of 200 meters and, as you can see in the pictures, it’s shallow (around 12 meters).  Water doesn’t cover enough until you walk deeper in it. It makes it a very good place to take a relaxing swim or to go with kids, well, as long as you can arrive here with them!

How To Get There

From both Ciutadella and Mao you must go to the Fàvaritx Lighthouse or to the Albufera des Grau. When you arrive at the road that leads you to the lighthouse, you have to ignore the “private property” sign and go ahead.

A little bit before you arrive at the lighthouse, you will see a free parking. Few meters further on the same road you will see an information sign with “Cala Tortuga” and “Cala Presili” on it.

The path that leads you to the beach is indicated at its beginning as “Son Camamil·la”. From that point you will have to walk about 1900 meters on the “Camí de Cavalls to arrive to “Cala Tortuga”. You can go by mountain bike without difficulties because it’s very well indicated. It’s almost impossible to get lost. It’s recommended that you bring some water.

Once You Get There

There are no services (bar, wc…) there. All you can do is enjoy the views of the lighthouse, the turquoise water and the beach. You have to bear in mind that it’s a beach frequented by nudists. But even in high season is not a beach full of tourists like the popular beach of Cavalleria or Pregonda.

If you like walking, the beach is on the Camí de Cavalls route. You can continue the route towards Maó and admire the beautiful landscapes of the north coast. It’s also good place to practice the snorkel or scuba diving. But if you are looking for rocky seabeds you have to go to one of the sides of the beach because in the middle of that beach there are lots of sand and only some posidonia meadows.
