houses in Menorca<\/strong>.<br \/>\nIt is a type of wall made only with stones and rocks, without cement or other mortar to hold them together.<br \/>\nIf you have ever been to Menorca you will surely have seen dozens of <strong>paths flanked by these peculiar stone walls<\/strong>, which can reach two meters high in some places.    <figure id=\"attachment_381\" id=\"What_is_Paret_Seca_used_for\"><\/span>What is Paret Seca used for?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>  The Paret Seca has<br \/>\n<strong>mainly 3 objectives in<\/strong> addition to its basic function of delimitation of land, roads and farms:   <\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>It serves to <strong>protect the crop fields from the strong winds<\/strong> of Menorca.<br \/>\nLet&#8217;s not forget that Menorca is an area where the Tramuntana rages and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menorcadiferente.com\/en\/winds-of-menorca\/\">the wind blows day in and day out<\/a>.<br \/>\nThe stone walls prevent the wind from blowing the soil away from the fields.  <\/li>\n<li>Thanks to the dry paret<strong>, stones are removed from the fields<\/strong> to be used in the construction of the walls.<br \/>\nThis makes it easier for the farmers to plow the fields.<br \/>\nThe fewer stones there are in the field, the easier it is to plow it.  <\/li>\n<li><strong>The delimitation of fields<\/strong> and grazing areas with dry grassland <strong>allows<\/strong> <strong>cattle to graze on a rotational basis<\/strong>.<br \/>\nRotational grazing is nothing more than using different fields alternately to allow the vegetation to recover between pastures. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Paret_Seca_today\"><\/span>Paret Seca today<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>  Contrary to what one might think, <strong>Paret Seca constructions are still being built in Menorca<\/strong>.<br \/>\nIn addition to the more than 10,000 kilometers of walls that are theoretically built in Menorca<em>(a fact that I find hard to believe, considering that the Chinese wall is measured at about 9,000 kilometers long<\/em>), stone walls are still being built and repaired on the island. <strong>In October 2009 the CIME <a title=\"https:\/\/www.cime.es\/novacime\/cim_beques_montefi_oct09.pdf\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cime.es\/novacime\/cim_beques_montefi_oct09.pdf\">announced in a communiqu\u00e9<\/a> that it was going to offer 10 scholarships to learn how to build Paret Seca<\/strong>, specifically with the aim of conditioning the Talayotic settlement of Montef\u00ed at <strong><a title=\"https:\/\/www.menorcadiferente.com\/localidades\/ciutadella-de-menorca\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.menorcadiferente.com\/en\/by-areas\/ciutadella-en\/\">Ciutadella<\/a><\/strong>.<br \/>\nContrary to what it may seem, the construction of stone walls without cement is a complicated and tedious process.<br \/>\nTo prevent the stones from falling down, some techniques must be used.<br \/>\nIf you are interested in knowing more about the construction of Paret Seca, I If we rely on the <a title=\"CIMa cartografia paret seca\" href=\"https:\/\/cartografia.cime.es\/publicacions\/publicacions.aspx?tipo=CU&amp;MENU=Inici\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">data of the mapping portal of the Consell Insular de Menorca<\/a>, it turns out that by approximation it is deduced that there are about <strong>11,119 km of dry stone walls on the island of Menorca<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThis means that the cost of construction of the walls today is about <strong>780 million euros<\/strong>, since building a dry stone wall currently costs about <strong>70 euros per meter<\/strong> (11,000km x 70\u20ac\/m = 778,300,000 Euros).   <\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Map_of_Paret_Seca_in_Menorca\"><\/span>Map of Paret Seca in Menorca<span
