title=\"https:\/\/portal.unesco.org\/science\/es\/ev.php-URL_ID=4793&amp;URL_DO=DO_TOPIC&amp;URL_SECTION=201.html\" href=\"https:\/\/portal.unesco.org\/science\/es\/ev.php-URL_ID=4793&amp;URL_DO=DO_TOPIC&amp;URL_SECTION=201.html\">Man and the Biosphere<\/a> (MaB) Coordination Committee <strong>declared Menorca a Biosphere Reserve<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe MaB project was initiated in 1970 by UNESCO with the objective of internationally recognizing geographic areas representative of the Earth&#8217;s different habitats.<br \/>\nBiosphere reserves are selected for their scientific interest based on a series of criteria directly related to what is currently known as <strong>sustainable development<\/strong>.    <\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_does_it_mean_to_be_a_Biosphere_Reserve\"><\/span>What does it mean to be a Biosphere Reserve?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>  Although <strong>biosphere reserves are not protected by any international treaty<\/strong>, the simple fact of belonging to the select group of territories considered biosphere reserves is an indication that we are facing something &#8220;special&#8221;: <strong>there are only 686 <\/strong>(in 2019)<strong> territories in the<a title=\"https:\/\/portal.unesco.org\/science\/es\/ev.php-URL_ID=6433&amp;URL_DO=DO_TOPIC&amp;URL_SECTION=201.html\" href=\"http:\/\/www.unesco.org\/new\/en\/natural-sciences\/environment\/ecological-sciences\/biosphere-reserves\/world-network-wnbr\/wnbr\/\"> World Network of Biosphere Reserves<\/a> <\/strong>.  But this title is not only honorary, since one of its objectives is that other territories with similar characteristics learn from the accumulated experience and can apply a similar model of sustainable development.  <\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"OBSAM_and_the_Biosphere_Reserve\"><\/span>OBSAM and the Biosphere Reserve<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>  The Observatori Socio-environmental de Menorca<a title=\"https:\/\/www.obsam.cat\/obsam\/ca\/index.php\" href=\"https:\/\/www.obsam.cat\/obsam\/ca\/index.php\">(OBSAM<\/a>) is a project of the Institut Menorqu\u00ed d&#8217;Estudis<a title=\"https:\/\/www.ime.cat\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ime.cat\/\">(IME<\/a>) at the service of the Menorca Biosphere Reserve.<br \/>\nThe OBSAM aims to collect and analyze local information in order to contribute to the observation of global change.<br \/>\nMore specifically, the three objectives of the OBSAM are:    <\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The permanent monitoring of sustainability in Menorca in all its aspects.<\/li>\n<li>Scientific assistance to public institutions involved in the management of the Menorca Biosphere Reserve.<\/li>\n<li>Public communication of the results of this monitoring and dissemination of the values and challenges of the Biosphere Reserve.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>  Thanks to OBSAM, a multitude of data and scientific studies on Menorca and its indicators of sustainability and social and economic development over time can be consulted on the Internet.  <\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Protected_Areas_of_Menorca\"><\/span>Protected Areas of Menorca<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>  The declaration of Biosphere Reserve means that there is a<strong> set of areas that are considered of special interest<\/strong> and therefore have to be protected to prevent their deterioration or disappearance over time.<br \/>\nIn the Biosphere Reserve of Menorca <strong>3 zones<\/strong> are distinguished <strong>according to the level of protection of<\/strong> each one of them.   <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Core Zone<\/strong>: an area strictly protected according to conservation objectives.<br \/>\nThis zone must contain unmodified natural ecosystems.<br \/>\nWithin it, only human activities directly related to the transformation of nature and scientific research are allowed.<br \/>\nIn Menorca, the core zone is the <strong>Albufera des Grau Natural Park<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThey represent 7.3% of Menorca&#8217;s territory.    <\/li>\n<li><strong>Amortization Zone<\/strong>: an area where only activities that are compatible with the protection of the core zone are allowed.<br \/>\nIn Menorca there are different Amortization Zones distributed throughout the insular territory, declared by the Government as <strong>Natural Areas of Special Interest<\/strong> or <strong>Rural Areas of Landscape Interest<\/strong> (ANEI and ARIP).<br \/>\nThey represent 38.5% of Menorca&#8217;s territory.  <\/li>\n<li><strong>Transition Zone<\/strong>: a zone that surrounds the two previous zones and that should be the framework for the socio-economic development functions of the reserve.<br \/>\nIn Menorca this zone is equivalent to the whole island.<br \/>\nWithin the transition zone there are some areas considered Normal Protection Rustic Land.<br \/>\nIt represents 54.2% of Menorca&#8217;s territory.   <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"20_Years_of_Biosphere_Reserve\"><\/span>20 Years of Biosphere Reserve<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>  In 2013 Menorca celebrated 20 years as a Biosphere Reserve.<br \/>\nTo &#8220;celebrate&#8221;
