Fortress of Isabel II: La Mola

  The Fortress of Isabel II, also known as the fortress of La Mola, is a mid-nineteenth century construction ordered by Isabel II in response to British military pressure on Menorca.
The strategic position of the island in the Mediterranean meant that the British were interested in dominating it in order to use it against the French in the struggle for dominance of the maritime routes. The construction of the fortress took a little more than 25 years, and when it was finally inaugurated in 1875 its artillery technology was already obsolete. One of the curiosities of this fortress is that it has never been attacked. Because of this, its state of conservation is excellent and it has become a very popular tourist attraction in Menorca.

Guided Tours

The visit to La Mola is undoubtedly a very interesting cultural activity, different from the typical sun and beach tourism.
Every year thousands of visitors are fascinated by this majestic and immense construction.
Although you can visit La Mola by buying the general ticket (8 Euros), the most logical thing to do is to hire a guided tour (3 Euros).
The guided tour usually lasts about 2 hours and consists of two parts: a part of 1:30h of the Fortified Zone (2 Euros) and another part of 30 minutes of the Vickers Zone (1 Euro).
If you don’t think you will be able to last the 2 long hours, you can always hire one of the two parts separately.
If you decide to visit La Mola, it is highly recommended to take into account the day and time.
A visit at 12:30 noon on a hot August day is not a good idea, even if some parts of the visit are underground.
It is also a good idea to bring binoculars (light! you will carry them for more than 2 hours!) to better contemplate the landscape and the views, and a bottle of water.
