How many people are too many people on the beach?
You may never have wondered, but unconsciously we all have a threshold of people above which we feel that the beach is “crowded”.
- If you go to a Biosphere Reserve like Menorca, the logical thing is that you want to be on its magnificent beaches as relaxed and quiet as possible… but how are you going to get that if you have the neighbor with his feet almost on your towel?
- According to a 2011 study by Anna Gallofré, with less than 8-9 m2 per person people begin to feel that the beach is saturated.
So to avoid the feeling of being “cramped” it is best to go to beaches that in summer have more than 9 m2 of towel space per person. Here goes the list!
Top 5 Empty Beaches in Summer – 2022
According to data from the 2022 technical report, these are the beaches with less load with respect to the maximum. The theoretical maximum load is 100% if each person has 10 square meters of sand. Remember that the data are taken in summer, so in spring and autumn it will be even more spacious.
- Rambles Cove – Sa Torreta (North): 2.07% of load
- Mica Cove(North): 7.27% of load
- Tamarells des Sud Cove (North): 22.21% of load
- Fustam Cove(South): 24.41% of load
- Son Bou – Talis(South): 29.16% of load
The 5 Most Crowded Beaches in Summer – 2022
According to data from the 2022 technical report, these are the beaches with the highest load with respect to the maximum The theoretical maximum load is 100% if each person has 10 square meters of sand. If the load exceeds 100% it means that there are less than 10 square meters per person… that is, there is no more room for towels on the sand 😉 . It is no coincidence that they are from the south, as the south coast of Menorca is more accessible than the north coast.
- Mitjana Cove (South): 476.48% of load
- Macarelleta (South): 430% load (that’s why I don’t recommend to go in Summer)
- Binidalí (South): 340% load
- Biniparratx (South): 280.99% of load
- Es Talaier (South): 210.68% of load
Where Does This Data Come From?
These data come from the annual technical report published by the Consell Insular de Menorca and OBSAM.
- Download Report – Public use of the beaches of the Menorca Biosphere Reserve – 2022
- Download Report – Servei D’informants of the Menorca Biosphere Reserve – 2018
The data of the people in each beach have been taken on each beach in 2 days of August (to know the maximum number of users). One of the days is working and the other is weekend. There are a total of 53 beaches on the island that are counted in this report. All urban beaches are included, so it is a good indicator of which beaches are more crowded and which are less crowded.
How is the Beach Surface Counted?
If we use the people/m2 ratio to measure beach crowding, it is very important to ensure that the beach area is counted correctly, otherwise the reference metric is worthless. The surface of the beach is drawn from the latest official data published. For the 2018 report, the 2015 data, which is the latest published data, have been used. In order to have the most reliable resting surface possible (surface on which you can lay a towel), several meters are deducted from the total sand surface of each beach:
- Areas with dunes
- Areas with vegetation
- Wetlands

2020 Data Update
In 2020 the Consell Insular de Menorca, together with the OBSAM, published the Technical Report on the use of the beaches of the Menorca Biosphere Reserve – 2020.
The report verifies the impact that COVID-19 has had on tourism.
The most striking data of the study:
- The beaches with the least surface area in 2020 were: Binidalí ( 1.6m2/person), Macarelleta (2.3m2/person) and Cala Mitjana (2.3m2/person).
- In 2020 the maximum number of users of Menorca’s beaches fell by 27% compared to 2019.
