The Virgin Beaches
Menorca has beaches that in many cases are still unspoiled and have nothing to envy to other more glamorous destinations.
To reach most of them you need a car, but the island is relatively small (it is about 45 km long and 20 km wide) and wherever you are you can reach any point in a short time.
This is especially interesting because it allows you to always enjoy calm beaches.
Before leaving for the beach…
The golden and very important rule to succeed in your beach day is to always look in which direction the wind is blowing.
If it blows from the north, your best option is the southern beaches.
If it’s blowing south, head north.
- In the hot months do not forget the umbrella, hats and water.
The large sarongs are very useful because they weigh little and with them you can also improvise a good awning. - For small babies, an ergonomic backpack will be essential to comfortably reach the most inaccessible beaches.
I, especially in August, usually go to the beach at the hours of low sun: either early in the morning (around 10am) or late in the afternoon (around 5pm).
This way we avoid the crowds on the beaches and parking lots as well as the hours of strong sun. - Don’t forget the sunscreen.
It seems obvious but with the excitement of the vacations sometimes we forget and then we have to return before the beach to avoid getting burned.
We use the 100ml gel type that you can put on sand and salt without any problem (and you can take it on the plane without any problem). - Take snorkeling goggles: if you feel like watching the fish underwater and enjoying the crystal clear waters, don’t forget your snorkeling goggles and snorkel.
You can take traditional or modern snorkelless goggles.
These recommendations and a little common sense are all you need to enjoy the beaches of Menorca with your family.
1. Morell Cove (North – Ciutadella)

Cala Morell is a beach of quick access by car and with nice views of the cove.
The access is easy and fast going down some stairs.
- You can go to the sandy beach (it is tiny) or to the platforms that are scattered around the cove.
- Although very rocky, children love to throw stones into the water or go to see the many crabs that hide in the rocks on the sides.
And for the older ones (and adults!) it is a perfect and beautiful place for snorkeling.
If you need to buy food or drink, on the way to the beach is the Trogloditas restaurant (closed in 2020).
For a drink and also for lunch with a beautiful view of the cove.
2. Santandria and Sa Caleta- (North – Ciutadella)

Santandria and Sa Caleta They are very close to Ciutadella and can be reached by public transport.
- They are close to hotels, have showers and numerous services around.
They are nice, but not very big and are usually quite crowded, especially in high season. - They are good to go with children for its ease of access, although you will not have that feeling of being in a special place.
I recommend them for an afternoon or morning when you don’t have much time to get to any other more appealing place or when you don’t feel like a big deployment of gear and beach preparations.
3. La Vall or Algaiarens Beaches (North – Ciutadella)

La Vall is a trio of beaches less than half an hour from Ciutadella, very beautiful and with many possibilities.
It is easy to reach by car and the parking area is large.
There are no showers or services nearby.
- Near the parking lot and next to the path to the beach there is a forest where you can improvise a picnic in the shade before or after the beach.
- The walk to the beach is short (5 minutes) but quite impracticable in a stroller because there is a lot of sand and some stairs at the end to access the beach.
When you get to the stairs, stop and enjoy the view.
A spectacle.
The beaches of La Vall are perfect for children.
The water is slow to cover and you can see many fish easily.
There is a rocky area to look for crabs and, if you go to the last beach (a short hike through the forest), you pass by a river where there are turtles.
On the second beach there is a clay wall where children can enjoy getting their hands dirty or dress up as an Indian.
The children love to paint themselves with it.
Do not abuse the clay, which clay baths are harmful to the environment and to people..
4. Alcaufar (South – Maó)
From the beach you can make a small excursion of 20 minutes where you will have very good views of the area and from where you will arrive to the very small Caló Roig.
If you are lucky and there is nobody there, it will become your little piece of paradise.
It is worth a try.
5. Es Grau (North – Maó)
Very calm and frequented by residents and walkers who stroll along l’Albufera. At the foot of the beach is the restaurant Tamarindos, very advisable to have a drink in its terrace.
- From Es Grau there are barges that take you to nearby beaches and the island of Colom.
An excursion that children will surely love.
6. Mesquida Cove (North – Maó)

Sa Mesquida has very good access by car and you hardly have to walk to get to the shore.
It is a big and wide beach of clean and clear waters. Very frequented by families of all the life.
According to the rains a small lagoon is formed very close to the beach that the children will be able to enjoy.
It has neither showers nor beach bar, but it does have a small truck of drinks and delicious handmade ice creams ideal for snacking.
7. Cavalleria Beach (North – Es Mercadal)

Cavalleria is a wild beachnot urban, but accessible by car.
Parking is free and it is about 15-20 minutes walk. To reach the beach you go down a staircase, so it is advisable to use a baby carrier instead of a stroller.
Cavalleria, together with La Vall, is one of the beaches famous for its clay walls that tourists use for mud baths.
- You have to know that it is NOT good for the ecosystem to be soaking in the clay, as it degrades the shoreline.
Very close to the beach is the Cavalleria lighthouse, a place with spectacular views of the northern cliffs.
8. Binimel-là Beach (North – Es Mercadal)

Binimel-là is a virgin beach of the marine reserve of the biosphere of Menorca.
The beach has no services, but at 10 minutes walking and next to the parking is the restaurant Binimel-là.
There you can eat, have a snack and relax on the terrace overlooking the sea.
- To get to the beach, you walk along wooden walkways to save the nearby wetland where several birds live, including geese that will surely ask you for some bread.
The path leaves from Binimel-là and it takes about 20 minutes to get there.
Pregonda is one of the most beautiful beaches of Menorca.
9. Cala Viola de Ponent Beach (North – Es Mercadal)

Cala Viola de Ponent is a set of 3 little known coves, small but very beautiful.
It is on the way to the lighthouse of Cavalleria, you will see a sign on the right hand side indicating where it is.
Next to the beach there is a free parking.
Actually there are three coves, at a short distance from each other.
You can change to get to know them all or simply choose the one that is less crowded.
They are not too big, they are virgin and without services, so take everything you need in the car.
It is a good place to snorkel and see fish with the naked eye.
10. Presili Cove (North – Maó)

Cala Presili is the northern infiltrate. If it were not for the rocks and the Favàritx lighthouse you would think we were in the south of Menorca.
- To get there you will have to do a short stretch of the Camí de Cavalls suitable for everyone.
- I have done it with two children of 3 and 6 years and has no difficulty.
On the way back you can take the opportunity to contemplate the magnificent Favàritx lighthouse.
11. Son Saura (South – Ciutadella)
Meters and meters of sand combined with posidonia that offer endless possibilities.
- It is easy to reach by car and there is only a short dirt road to the first beach.
Then you can walk as far as you want to visit the part that is farther away from the parking lot. - There are toilets (only in summer) in the parking area and a small area with pine trees and shade for picnics or a nap when the kids are tired of the sun.
In August it is better to go early (around 10 am) or late (around 5 pm) as it is closed for cars when the parking lot is full. It is a beach accessible by stroller.
The water is very calm and does not cover too early, ideal for children. .
12. Binigaus Beaches (South – Es MigJorn Gran)

Binigaus is easily reached by car.
The road to the beach is very entertaining for children and they can often see horses grazing.
- Binigaus beach is a virgin beach, with white sand and turquoise waters.
It is in an urbanized area so in summer it is very frequented.
If you want to get away from the crowd, you have to walk to the end. - There are no toilets or any establishment to buy refreshments and food, but in Santo Tomás (the beach next door) you will find everything.
You can combine this beach with dinner at the beach bar Es Bruc, which is next to the parking lot where you left the car.
A great plan!
13. Galdana Cove (South – Es MigJorn Gran)

Cala Galdana is a beautiful beach, but very urbanized.
If you want to rest one day of virgin beaches and have restaurants next to it, this can be a good option.
There are aquatic activities, beach bars, sun loungers…
From Galdana you can make a small excursion to a viewpoint from where you will have spectacular views of the cove and the area.
