Kayaking Menorca
Última actualización: 20/08/2024

Throughout the island there are companies that are dedicated to the rental of kayaks to explore the coast.
It is possible to rent kayaks and go on your own, or hire an excursion with a monitor to accompany you on the adventure. If you do not have experience in kayaking it is always better to hire an excursion with a guide, since in addition to the technique he can show you the most beautiful or hidden places and give you a hand in case the weather or the sea is complicated.
A good guide always knows:
- What will the weather be like
- The wind that will blow
- Adapt the excursion to your physical level
- The best direction to go at all times.

Before Kayaking Consult the Wind
If you are going kayaking it is important to know what the weather will be like during the day and what wind will be blowing.
- Especially when the routes are long and there are no beaches to stop at, it is important to avoid storms and rough seas.
- In general, the north coast of Menorca, for long trips, is more dangerous than the south coast.
Where to make Transparent Kayak
Thanks to the fact that you can see through the kayak’s floor, you will be able to appreciate the flora and fauna wherever you go.
You will also have the sensation of floating on the water, but seeing the seabed.
If you feel like trying a different experience, and a little less physically demanding, I recommend you to try a transparent kayak route.
Where to do Traditional Kayaking

In almost all tourist areas you can rent kayaks.
The most popular areas are the bay of Fornells, Es Grau and Cala Galdana, since you can arrive by car and get into the kayak right there.
There are also companies that have an office in Ciutadella or Maó and leave from the most convenient point of the island depending on the wind or the client’s preferences. I recommend the Bay of Fornells if you just want to practice some outdoor sports, do some snorkeling and see some deserted mini-beach.
If what you want is to tour the coast and visit beaches, there are many options for excursions of one or more days, here are some popular ones:
- Rent a Kayak in Es Canutells – 36€/person and do the route of the 7 caves: you will see the cave d’Esbufador from which you can see the sky, and you will also see the cave of Ses Atxes with stalactites.
- Rent a kayak in Cala Galdana and go to the southern beaches: Trebalúger, Fustam, Escorxada and Binigaus.
It is a very good option for people with little experience who want to see the southern beaches. - Rent a kayak in Fornells – 40€, and head towards the northern beaches: Cavalleria, Mica, Binimel-là, Pregonda.
You can also stay on the beaches inside the bay. - Rent a kayak in Es Grau and head out to Illa den Colom and the beaches of Tamarells des Sud.
This is a good option if you want to visit the small Illa den Colom and see some of its little frequented beaches (except in July-August).

Route 6 – Cala Blanes – Calan Brut – Pont d’en Gil (8 Km)

- Route through an area where there is usually not much maritime traffic near the coast, as it is a passing area for boats.

Route 7 – Cala Galdana – Macarella – Macarelleta (5 Km)

- Very simple and very popular route to visit the most famous beaches of Menorca.

Route 8 – Galdana – Mitjana – Mitjaneta (9 Km)

- Easy route to visit 2 very popular beaches in Menorca.
- Cala Galdana is a good starting point due to the number of parking lots.
- Note that since 2018 the parking lots are quite full due to the closure of the Macarella and Macarelleta parking lot (people park in Galdana and walk to those beaches).
Route 9 – Santo Tomás – Binigaus – Escorxada (8 Km)

- An easy short distance route that allows you to sail under the cliffs of Binigaus and visit Cala Escorxada, which is one of the most secluded beaches on the south coast.
Kayak around Menorca
One of the star excursions in Menorca is the kayak tour around the island.
There are different options for those who do not have enough time to do the complete tour: the half tour around the north, and the half tour around the south.
What you have to keep in mind is that if you do not have enough time it is not worth trying to do the round trip around the island since you will not be able to enjoy the beaches and the landscapes of Menorca.
Besides, it is not always possible to go around the island, the weather rules, and if the Tramontana blows for a week you will hardly be able to complete the round trip.
To do the round trip in kayak can cost you about 130€ in rent if you manage to do it in 7 days.
For a week of equipment rental, the normal cost is about 140 € of material costs.
Kayak Rental Companies
You can book an excursion of about 3 hours with an instructor and do it the day you feel like it depending on the weather.
I recommend everyone to try kayaking for a day!
