Rafal Rubí – Burial Vessels

The purpose of these monuments was to protect the spirits of the deceased and they were used as collective pantheons.
In the archaeological site of Rafal Rubí 2 navetas are preserved, which are basically differentiated by their position.
The first naveta is the northern naveta (from the north), and is partially collapsed on the top.
This naveta was excavated in 1977 and only some bone remains were found inside.
On the outside it is about 13 meters long and inside there is a narrow corridor of less than 1 meter wide that gives access to the lower chamber.
The second naveta is known as the southern naveta and is somewhat better preserved than its northern neighbor and has two floors.
It is about 16 meters long and still preserves the two chambers (lower and upper) but without the cover.
When this naveta was excavated, two bronze pieces were found.

How to get to Rafal Rubí by Car
From Maó you have to take the road towards Ciutadella and turn right at the Rafal Rubí signpost, approximately at kilometer 6 of the road.
From Ciudatella you have to go towards Maó by the main road, and when you are about to arrive to Maó you have to take the same detour, although it is very difficult to see the sign and most probably you will pass it and you will have to go backwards.
Once you take the Rafal Rubí detour, a few meters away, on the left side of the road you will see the two Rafal Rubí Navetas.

If you have come to the navetas of Rafal Rubí is because you are surely interested in the culture and history of Menorca.
You are in a place built thousands of years ago that still fascinates archaeologists today.
The best thing you can do is to walk around every corner, go inside the navetas and appreciate every detail of these two monuments.
And remember that you are in a prehistoric place, respect it and preserve it so that it will still be standing in another few thousand years.
