The market building finished its construction in 1985, and since then it has been remodeled more than once.
The most recent refurbishment was done in 2011 to solve problems with leaks and to modify the floor, which was a bit slippery and could cause customers to fall.
Such is the popularity of this market that it even appeared in one of the famous Estrella Damm commercials.

How to get to the Mercat des Peix
Getting to the Mercat de Ciutadella is quite easy.
- From the Plaza des Born in the center of Ciutadella, just take the main street towards Ses Voltes, and turn right when you see the signs.
- If you want to go by car it is best to leave it in the Plaça des Born, although you have to pay the ticket in the blue zone.
The Plaza del Mercat and the Tardeo
Another very characteristic point of the market square is the area of Ciutadella’s butcher’s shops, located just in front of the market.
All the butcheries are located under wrought iron arches with white and green tiles.
Throughout the year, but especially in summer, Tardeo has become fashionable in the market area.

If you want to buy fish in summer, you will probably end up buying fish from the fish farm, as the “wild” fish is usually sold directly to the many restaurants in Ciutadella, which are in high demand in the hot months.
