The Bar Imperi of Ciutadella is a historical and very good Tapas Bar.
Bar Imperi opened in 1941 and is well known in Ciutadella and the rest of Menorca.
It is located in the Plaza des Born, a very central place of Ciutadella.

  • For me this is one of the best places in Ciutadella to go for lunch or dinner sandwiches and toast, and one of my favorites to buy and take to the beach.
  • It is also an ideal place to have breakfast in the sun (both in summer and winter) on either of its two terraces (an outdoor terrace in the sun, and a more sheltered inner courtyard).

The Food

Bar Imperi is especially famous for its Bocadillos and Tostadas with a delicious bread called Llonguet.
The llonguets or rolls can be made of white bread or whole wheat bread (I like the whole wheat better). Some of the most popular sandwiches are:

  • Sobrasada and Honey (with optional Maò Cheese)
  • Cuixot with melted Maò cheese
  • Potato omelet

They also serve very good sweets such as the Ensaimada ( normal and chocolate) and the Chocolatecroissants.

The terrace of Bar Imperi is one of my favorites in Ciutadella.
It has about 15 tables where you can enjoy peacefully both in winter and summer.

  • In winter they usually have the umbrellas folded and the sun shines both in the morning and in the afternoon.
  • In summer they usually have the umbrellas unfolded to provide shade, as it is very hot.

In the Patio Interior, inside the restaurant, they have about 6 tables where you can enjoy sandwiches and tapas in a very quiet environment.

The virgin beaches of Algaiarens, also known as La Vall or La Vall d’Algaiarens, are the closest beaches to Ciudadela. It can be easily reached by car, and has two parking lots located about 300 and 500 meters from the beach access respectively. Access to the beach by car was paid years ago, but not anymore.

To get there, take the Cala Morell road and turn off before reaching the crossroads towards the urbanization. It is difficult to get lost as it is extremely well signposted, like almost everything in Menorca. To get to the parking lot you have to go through a narrow road surrounded by pine trees, so it is advisable to go carefully and at low speed, especially because of the cyclists you may encounter.

Taxis

The taxi in Menorca is insufficient in summer, and the fact that the taximeters are not yet in operation is a problem. The traveler feels helpless, and must rely on the taxi driver’s honesty. Despite the general feeling that the taxi is expensive in Menorca, some reports of the BOIB say that the cost per kilometer of taxi is 0.50 euros, one of the cheapest in Spain.

Sa Farola Beach – Cala des Frares

The beach of Sa Farola, also known as Cala des Frares, is a tiny cove located very close to the port of Ciutadella.
It is a very very small beach with hardly any sand space for towels.
Most of the bathers use the concrete platforms built around the sea.
This beach is very well protected from the wind, so the water is always calm.
In addition, from 2021 the entry of boats to this area has been banned.
It has been a drastic measure to protect the posidonia meadows on the seabed in the area.
If you end up on this beach, it is most likely because you are walking along the magnificent Paseo de Sa Farola, which connects Ciutadella with Cala en Blanes along the coast.
