Although it is possible to move around Menorca by public transport, bike or cab, the car is the option that offers more freedom of movement.
Not everyone can or wants to reach the island by boat, so in summer there are thousands of people who need to rent a car.
Car rental in Menorca is a totally seasonal business:

During the months of June to September there is much more demand than supply and prices are very high.
In addition, some of the most popular beaches close access by car to avoid traffic jams and crowds.

For this reason, if you are thinking of moving around Menorca by rental car it is best to book your vehicle well in advance.

In Menorca car rental companies are everywhere.
There are also some hotels and small businesses that rent cars on a small scale.
Some of the best known companies are:

• Momple Rent a Car (recommended): Local company with 44 years of history that offers very good conditions for rentals with full insurance.
  Only for people over 25 years old.
• Balmes MenorcaLocal company with free deliveries and pick-ups all over the island.
  One of the only ones that rent to people under 25 years old.
• Rentalcars (recommended if you want everything in one App): Rentalcars is a comparison portal that aggregates hundreds of car rental companies.
  It serves to compare prices between several options.
  They are the same as Booking.com and the truth is that the system works very well, and their Android and iOS App is a marvel.
• Sixt: with branches at Maó airport and Ciutadella port.
  A lot of offer of cars of different prices and benefits, for all the pockets.
  If you travel with children, Sixt branches have seats adapted for babies and children.
• OwnersCars: They are one of the cheapest for rentals of less than 4 days.
  After that, you have to be careful with the gasoline expenses that they try to charge you, but even so it sometimes pays off.
• Hertz: A well known international company.
  For those who do not want surprises or are regular customers.
• Tramuntana Rent a Car: Local company offering a free hotel delivery service.
• Minurka rent a car: Local company offering cars, motorcycles and scooters for rent.
• Budget: They give you a discount if you pay on the spot instead of paying when you arrive to pick up the car.
• Avis: Well known company, a little more expensive than other options.
• EuropCar: Another nationally known company.
• AutosValls: A Menorcan company with offices all along the south coast of the island.
  They are not the cheapest but they do not charge absurd fuel costs.
• GoldCar: Another cheap one but tries to charge disproportionate fuel costs if you rent for more than 3 days.
  Try to get them to apply the full/full fuel rate, this way you won’t have to pay for fuel at absurd prices.

Car Rental Tips

As always, here are some tips for those of you who want to rent a car to move around Menorca.

• Choose the full/full fuel policy: Make sure your rental is full/full, i.e. you get it with a full tank and you return it full.
  Otherwise you will pay a very high price for gasoline.
• Pick up and return your car at the airport.
  Although a little more expensive, the convenience of arriving and having your car is fantastic.
• Be careful with the car’s underbody and tires.

• Don’t buy insurance at the counter: If you are offered insurance at the counter, I recommend NOT to buy it.
  I usually buy annual insurance online that covers any rental, they are much cheaper than the ones you buy at any airport counter.
• GPS is not necessary.
  Menorca is a small island and with a good map you can get out of any situation.
  Besides you have Google Maps in any phone.
• If you are under 25 years old, the rental company will probably charge you a young driver bonus.
  If you can put the car in the name of someone older than 25 years you will have a cheaper price.
• Use the car comparator on this page: it searches hundreds of websites and you can sort by price.

Avoid getting ripped off on fuel!

Something that is becoming fashionable among rental companies is to try to charge a full deposit when the rental is for a period of 4 days or more.
In those cases, you should know that the cost they try to charge is disproportionate compared to the real cost of a full tank of gas. I recommend paying a penalty (which can be around 20€ plus VAT) instead of the full tank, and then return the car full of gasoline.
Otherwise they will charge you an exorbitant deposit (more than 80€) and will make you return the car empty, when it is much easier to return the car full as there is a gas station inside the airport itself.
