Algendar Ravine
The Algendar Ravine (Barranc d’Algendar) is the largest and most important ravine in Menorca and goes from Ferreries to the beach of Cala Galdana.
This ravine has spectacular vertical walls, which in some points of the ravine are more than 80 meters high.
The peculiarity of this ravine is the presence of water throughout the year, including the summer season.
In fact, the entire ravine has been formed thanks to the erosion of the river that runs along the bottom.
The Route
The excursion to the Barranco viewpoint is a simple route of 4km one way and 4km return.
It is a total of 8km that can be done walking in about 3 hours.
- The first part of the trail can be done by bike, but there comes a time when it is totally impossible to continue with it, so it is best to go on foot from the beginning.
- Sheep and goats can be seen along the road.
Sheep are more docile and will let you photograph them if you don’t bother them, but goats will run away from you as soon as they hear you, so it is much more difficult for you to see them.
During the excursion you will have to cross the small torrent that runs through the base and at some point there are areas with a steep slope, so try not to carry your backpack too much if you do not want to get exhausted.
The excursion to the ravine is a very good plan for sunny days or for those who are looking for an intermediate between sun and beach.
The viewpoint of the Barranc d’Algendar ravine
When you reach the end of the route, at the “top” of the ravine, you will see a viewpoint with a metal fence to prevent fatal falls of hikers.
Be careful because the vertical walls are more than 50 meters high, so any false step or slip is very dangerous.
From the viewpoint you can contemplate the majesty of the ravine and have a very good perspective of the two vertical walls that rise on the sides of the stream.
These views are very different from any landscape you can find in Menorca.
