Naveta des Tudons

Naveta des Tudons is the most famous Naveta of Menorca.
It is located in Ciutadella, it has a free parking.
The Naveta is 13.6 meters long and 6.5 meters wide.
At present (2021) the access to the interior of the Naveta des Tudons is forbidden.

What are Navetas?

The navetas are constructions of stones fitted together without any type of cement ( cyclopean constructions). The burial navetas of Menorca are one of the most characteristic elements of the prehistory of the island.The most famous naveta of Menorca is the Naveta des Tudons.

The History of the Naveta des Tudons

The Naveta des Tudons is the oldest fully preserved buildingin Europe, and its construction dates around 1000 BC. It is a collective funerary monument, in whose interior the bodies of more than 100 individuals were found, as well as bronze and bone objects. The name Naveta comes from its resemblance to an inverted boat (ship). This name was given by Joan Ramis i Ramis in 1818 when he published Celtic Antiquities of the Island of Menorca. Joan Ramis defended (erroneously) that the Naveta was a temple dedicated to Isis, the inventor of navigation and the goddess protector of sailors.

In March 2018 someone graffitied the Naveta thus damaging this historic monument.

• The graffiti affected 81 of the Naveta’ s stones.
• The paint was removed by a team of restorers within a few weeks.

Visits and Price

Anyone with an interest in the island’s past should visit this building, which is in a very good state of preservation. Access to the interior of the Naveta des Tudons is prohibited for security reasons, but it is still possible to visit the building and its surroundings.

• The price of the visit is only 2 Euros per person,but on Mondays you can visit for free.

How to Get to the Naveta des Tudons

To get to Naveta des Tudons you only need to head towards Ciutadella on the main road of Menorca. In case of leaving from Ciutadella, you have to go in the direction of Maó. La Naveta is located on the main road between Maó and Menorca (the Me-1 road) and is quite well signposted.

• Parking is free.

To get to the Naveta you will have to walk about 5 minutes from where the car is left. If it is sunny, the trail will be a little harder, but it is suitable for everyone, from children to seniors.
