Última actualización: 21/08/2024
The Natura 2000 Network (in Catalan Xarxa Natura 2000, or xn2000) is made up of 3 distinct natural areas: SCIs, SACs and SPAs.
SCIs are Sites of Community Importance that contain habitats and species representative of the area in which they are located and which, due to their general interest, must be protected and recovered. SACs are Special Areas of Conservation that have specific regulations and conservation measures to ensure the maintenance of the habitats and species they include.
SCIs normally become SACs after a period of time if they are properly managed by the relevant authorities.
SPAs are Special Protection Areas for Birds that, due to their characteristics, are favorable for the conservation of migratory and sedentary birds.
The SPAs include feeding and breeding areas for birds . Some of the areas of Menorca within the Natura 2000 Network are:
- Cala Pilar
- Els Alocs
- El Pas den Revull
- Binimel-la beach
- The Marine Reserve of the North of Menorca,
- The albufera des Grau,
- almost the entire north and south coast of Menorca.
In fact, the Natura 2000 Network occupies 35% of the island’s land surface.
35% of the island’s terrestrial surface, so the Natura 2000 you will have to try hard not to step on it during your stay on the island!
