Sa Farola Lighthouse
Última actualización: 20/08/2024

Located in the promenade of sa Farola, only 1 km from the center of Ciutadella, it is possibly the most ignored lighthouse by all those who pass by it.
The construction of this lighthouse began in 1861 and was completed and inaugurated in 1863.
In 2013 it celebrated 150 years since its opening!
This lighthouse was one of the first of all the Balearic Islands to inaugurate the electric lighting system, in 1918.
Due to its exposure to the sea (it is a lighthouse located at a very low altitude, 21 meters above sea level, which caused the waves to enter inside the lighthouse often) it was decided to build a protective wall in front of the cliff.
The house that was built for the lighthouse keeper on duty is still today the house of the person in charge of the maintenance of the 3 lighthouses of Ciutadella (Sa Farola, Punta Nati and Artrutx).

How to Get to Sa Farola Lighthouse
It is extremely easy to reach the lighthouse of Sa Farola, especially compared to all the other lighthouses of the island.
If you come from Maó you have to head towards Ciutadella on the main road.
Once you are in Ciutadella all you have to do is look for the “Port Vell” signs or ask for the road to Sa Farola.
You can also choose to go to the Platforms of Cala en Brut and on the way back take the opportunity to walk along the Sa Farola Road that starts in the small Cala en Blanes. If you are in Ciutadella I recommend 100% to walk to the lighthouse of Sa Farola.
It is a super easy excursion that you can extend as much as you want until you reach Cala en Brut.

Once There
Sa Farola lighthouse is not like the rest of the lighthouses of Menorca.
It is located in an urban area and does not have great landscapes around it nor paradisiacal beaches nearby.
- If you decide to visit the lighthouse, the ideal is to complement it with a walk along the promenade, stopping at one of the viewpoints that are in front of the cliffs.
- In the mornings and at sunset it is very common to see runners doing a little sport, so you can also consider it.
- Avoid at all costs the hot hours between 12 and 5 o’clock, especially in the months of June, July and August!
