History of the Castle
Santa Àgueda Castle, located 264 meters above sea level, was built by the Arabs during the Caliphate of Cordoba.
This castle served as a point of defense until 1343 when it was destroyed by Pedro IV of Aragon.
It is currently in ruins, so do not expect to see large buildings when you visit it.
How to get to Santa Àgueda
It is very easy to reach the castle.
With the car you must take the detour to Santa Àgueda on the road from Maó to Ciutadella.
The entrance is very well indicated, as you can see in the picture, and from this point you have to walk about 1300 meters to the top .
The path is suitable for everyone.
There is no parking, and the entrance only fits about 3 or 4 cars, so…. don’t go with a lot of people!
The entrance is free and you can always visit, although in summer I recommend you to try it on not very hot or a little cloudy days, because otherwise the heat will make you have a hard time during the climb.
Once There…
Although it is advertised as a castle, you will soon realize that it is the ruins of what hundreds of years ago was a castle.
The few buildings that are still standing are closed and you can not enter them, so you can simply look from the outside and through the bars of doors and windows.
The best thing about this site is its views, from the highest part of the hill you will see Monte Toro, the lighthouse of Cavallería, and the entire north coast of Menorca.
