The Necropolis of Cala Morell

The Necropolis of Cala Morell is one of the most spectacular in Menorca(Cales Coves is in first place). It consists of a set of 14 stone caves artificially carved into the cliffs of a ravine. Some of its caves have architectural elements that may surprise more than one, especially considering that they are funerary constructions from thousands of years ago: there are columns in the interiors, “skylights” with views to the sky and what in some cases seem to be windows, at least under my inexperienced point of view.

What are the Necropolis of Menorca?

Necropolis is a word of Greek origin that can be translated as City of the Dead.
The Necropolis, as its name indicates, were used as a cemetery since pre-Talayotic times.
The necropolis of Menorca are located in coastal cliffs and are spectacular both for the amount of caves in them and for the places where they are located.

The most popular necropolis in Menorca are the Necropolis of Cales Coves and the Necropolis of Cala Morell.

How to get to the Necropolis of Cala Morell

The Necropolis can be reached either by car or bicycle.

  • If you leave from Ciutadella, all you have to do is head towards the Cala Morell urbanization and follow the signs to the Necropolis once there.
  • To get there from Maó, it is necessary to take the main road to Ciutadella, and look for the signs to Cala Morell when you are near Ciutadella (more details on the map).

In any case, there is a small parking lot very close to the entrance of the Necropolis.
If you go in summer, this parking lot will most likely be full, so you can look for places elsewhere in the urbanization of Cala Morell, which is relatively small.

Visits to the Necropolis

Fortunately the visit to the Necropolis of Cala Morell is free.
If you feel like making a visit on your own, unless you are very interested in the subject, 1 hour should be enough to see most of the surrounding caves and nooks and crannies.
If you want to combine the cultural visit with some rest and relaxation, right in the same urbanization you can find the beach of Cala Morell.
Cala Morell is quite a good place to practice some snorkeling or apnea, as there is a lot of marine fauna and rocky bottoms.
