All tourists who travel to Menorca want to know which are the best beaches of the island. Therefore, I have listed the 10 best ones. Although it is a matter of personal preference, I guarantee you that no one of them will disappoint you.
In our list I have chosen 5 beaches from the north of the island and 5 from the south in order to provide more variety. The south ones are usually located closer to the urban areas than the north ones, which are placed in isolated areas.
The main criteria to rank the beaches are the landscape and the isolation from urban areas; in the list you will not find beaches with bars, hotels or restaurants on the beachfront first line.
The top 10 list is as it follows;
1 – Cala Pregonda (north)
Cala Pregonda is the jewell in the crown of the south. It is very good rated by the visitors of Menorca, placed in the middle of nowhere, and requires a mandatory walk unless you access by boat.
The beach appears in the album cover of Mike Oldfield and in the Estrella Damm advertisements of 2010. It is well worth visiting!
2 – Cala Escorxada (south)
Cala Escorxada is the unknown of the south. Very few people visit this beach mainly because of the rocky path that you have to cross for over 1 hour to arrive. With no services of any kind, it is very frequented by boats who anchor near to the beach when north wind blows.
I am not going to lie to you, you have to love walking (in summer at 30 degrees under the sun) to think about the possibility of visiting the beach, but the views along the way are spectacular.
3 – Cala Presili (north)
Cala Presili is the infiltrated of the north. If it weren’t for the rocks and the Favaritx Lighthouse, you could believe that it is the south of the island. But it is not, we are in Albufera Des Grau, next to a lighthouse from another planet and near to Cala Tortuga. Enjoy it.
4 – Es Talaier (south)
Es Talaier is the little sister of Son Saura. This one is the typical beach of the south of Menorca. Fine and creamy sand, water that allows you to spot the bottom and beautiful panoramic views. Unfortunately, every summer the sand of Es Talaier is plenty of people who want to enjoy the beautiful beach. To arrive there, you have to walk a while.
5 – Cala Pilar (north)
Cala Pilar is not easy to spot. Only hikers and those privileged ones who own a boat use to pass by to see this wonderful beach in the north of the island. Those days when the north wind is blowing, it is better not to go unless your intention is to fly a kite!
6 – Cala Cavalleria (north)
Cavalleria is very visited for several reasons. Not only is placed in a unique natural area but it is part of the Camí de Cavalls gr223 (Horse Path). As if this was not enough, there is a car parking only 5 minutes walking from the beach.
When you put a virgin beach inside of a marine reserve, you add some trails and you place the beach at 5 minutes walk from your car with air conditioning, the only posible outcome is a beach plenty of people in summer!
7 – Cala en Turqueta (south)
Cala en Turqueta is another diamond of the south. After the Estrella Damm advertisement left Cala Macarella full of people, Cala en Turqueta was there to take over. Another postcard from the south ready for your relatives and your friends. The photo that you can see was taken from Talaia de Artrutx, but from the sand you can also take very wonderful pictures. The only inconvenient is that touristic boats that come from the port of Ciutadella and Cala en Bosch usually stop for 1 hour in Cala en Turqueta… Therefore, if you are on the beach at that very moment, you better take it easy, the invasion will be slow but constant.
8 – Binigaus (south)
Binigaus is a beach located very close to Santo Tomás and half way to Escorxada. Often frecuented by nudists in summer, it is a beautiful beach near la Cova des Coloms. It is very exposed to the wind of the south; if you go when it blows from the south, you will be able to enjoy amusing waves.
The little island in front of Binigaus named Binicondrell provides the tourist gorgeous views of the horizon. This one is not very far from urban areas as the beaches that we have already seen, but it is very beautiful, isn’t it?
9 – La Vall (north)
The beaches of La Vall (Algaiarens) have also “benefited” from the Estrella Damm advertisement in 2010. They have 2 car parks close, so the beach is also filled with tourists in summer.
You can even set up a volleyball net if you get there early as the beach is considerably large. Children also play soccer next to the lifeguard. A beach suitable for everyone.
10 – Son Saura (south)
Son Saura is the largest beach of Ciutadella. Extensive amounts of sand offer plenty of possibilities. If you wonder why they do not take out the seaweed from the shore, the reason is to protect the ecosystem; seaweed avoid wind and from removing the sand from the beach. If you do not want to walk to Es Talaier, Son Saura is a good bet!
